Notice the natural rhythm

Start by observing where daylight arrives, where it falls away and which surfaces reflect it. The room already has a changing character before a single light is switched on.

Build layers

A comfortable atmosphere often comes from several modest sources rather than one dominant fixture. Consider the practical task, the surrounding space and the object or texture you want to bring forward.

Make room for shadow

Light becomes expressive through contrast. A darker corner can give the illuminated part of a room its sense of depth. The aim is a composition that supports both activity and rest.
